For Sale: Table 1 At Elaine’s

For almost fifty years, Elaine’s was New York’s best-known celebrity hangout, where Woody Allen and a host of bold-faced writers, actors, and artists were regulars. It was a challenge to get a table at the Upper East side saloon, which closed earlier this year,, but now anybody can buy one.  On September 20, Doyle will auction the estate of Elaine Kaufman, the restaurant’s notorious proprietor, including table no. 1 and its four chairs, which are estimated at a mere $400-$600.

The estimate, says Doyle’s chief executive, doesn’t reflect the item’s “celebrity premium.” Nor do estimates for a host of other items, including the papier-mache carousel horse that was in the restaurant’s window ($200-$400), the kitchen’s copper pots ($200-$400), or its vintage cash register from behind the bar ($400-$600). Also on the block will be artwork from Kaufman’s collection, including two works by Andy Warhol, a David Hockney etching, and a French Art Nouveau poster by Toulouse-Lautrec.
